How do I setup Outlook Express for email?

Setup : Outlook Express Email

This article tells you how to set up Outlook Express with an Internet Service Provider.

To set up Outlook Express with your user name and password in your ISP's account, you need to create an account in Outlook Express to download and send emails.
  • Open Outlook Express by double-clicking Outlook Express icon on your desktop.

  • Click on Tools in the menu bar and then go to Accounts.

  • The Internet Accounts pop-up window appears.

  • Click on the Mail tab. If you are starting Outlook Express for the first time, there would not be any email accounts listed on this window.

  • To add a new mail account, click Add > Mail.

  • Internet Connection Wizard pop-up windows will appear.

  • On the Your Name page of the wizard enter your name in the Display name field as you would like it to appear on your outgoing e-mail messages.

  • Click Next to continue.

  • The Internet Connection Wizard will now ask for your email address.

  • Type in your full e-mail address on the Internet E-mail Address screen.

  • Click Next to continue.

  • In the next window, you need to feed in three important bits of information - the incoming and outgoing email servers and the type of the incoming email server.
  • On the E-mail Server Names screen, select POP3 from the drop down list.

  • In the space provided below Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server; enter mail.xpress.com.

  • Type in smtp.xpress.com as your Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:

►Note: The above are just indicative. Details of incoming and outgoing servers will be provided by your I.S.P. If you are a beginner, you might not know what the incoming and outgoing servers mean. It is not important at this stage to know the meaning; you simply need to know their values. Call up your I.S.P. and ask them to provide the information.

  • Click Next to continue.

The last information that you need to enter to complete the setup of the new account is the user name and password for that email account. These login details would have been given to you by your ISP or you would have set these online using a control panel.

  • So, on the Internet Mail Logon screen, type in the ISP user name in the field titled Account name:

  • Check the box  Remember password  if you want OE to remember your password.
    Note:
If you're concerned about break-ins to your e-mail, un-check this box. You'll then be prompted for the password each time you send or retrieve mail.

  • Click Next.

  • Congratulations, you have now set up Outlook Express as your e-mail program.

  • Click Finish.

You're ready to send your first email!

  • Although the Internet Connection Wizard has collected the basic information needed to receive email, you still need to complete a couple of other steps to send mail through the mail servers of your ISP.

  • In the Internet Accounts window ,select the mail account you just created and click "Properties.

  • In the Properties window, select the Servers tab.

  • Place a check in the My server requires authentication option.

  • Click the Settings button.

  • In the Outgoing Mail Server box that appears, select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  • Click OK.

  • Select the Advanced tab. Under Server Port Numbers, change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) from whatever number is in the field to the one applicable to your ISP.

  • Click OK .

  • Click Close from the Internet Accounts window to return to the main Outlook Express window.

  • You have now successfully set up the Outlook Express account for email. Send an e-mail message to a friend. If they get the message, your account is ready to roll!
